The Roumanian-born mezzo-soprano Hermine May, has won many international Opera competitions and started her career at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, immediately after completing her studies at the University of Music in Stuttgart.
In the years that followed she developed an international career as a dramatic mezzo-soprano with engagements as Carmen, Amneris, Brangäne, Venus, Dalila, Azucena etc. Sie sang among others Carmen under the baton of Maestro Frühbeck de Burgos and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, at the Festival Avenches Opera and other important theaters. As Amneris/Aida she performed in the Arena Basel, at the Festival Avenches Opera and National Opera Bucharest. Her Brangäne/Tristan and Isolde brought her to the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, at the Teatro Filarmonico/ Fondazione Arena di Verona, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and to the Richard Wagner Festival in Wels/Austria (2010 and 2015).
As Magdalene/Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg she was heard at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.
Since then, she has established herself as a interpreter of Richard Wagner roles like Kundry, Venus, Ortrud.
Venus/Tannhäuser she was performing in the Theatre of Kiel, at the Royal Danish Opera House of Copenhagen (2010), at the Opera House of Dortmund (2015) and at the Richard Wagner Festival in Wels/ Austria (2013). At the same Festival she sang 2012 Kundry/Parsifal.
She gave her debut at the Scala di Milano in „Les Contes d’Hoffmann“ with „Une voix“ in 2012. Successfully she sang the Azucena/Trovatore at the Opera House of Dortmund (2014).
At the Festival of Deva/Roumania she was heard as Carmen/Carmen (2014) and as Amneris/Aida (2015).
On the concert platform, she has had great success with works such as Beethoven’s 9 th, Zemlinsky Orchestra Songs (both with Zubin Mehta), Mahler’s Song of the Earth, Verdi’s Requiem, Brahms‘ Alto-Rhapsody (Medellin Philharmonic Orchestra 2015), The Music Makers of Edgar Elgar (Bergen/Norway 2016), Wagner’s Wesendonck-Songs.
Hermine May’s CD recordings include Bellini’s „Il Pirata“ conducted by Marcello Viotti, Schubert’s Mass in E-flat (with Jonas Kaufmann, Hermann Prey, Deon van der Walt) unter Maestro Cambreling and Loewe’s „Die drei Wünsche“. She can be seen on DVD as Carmen and Amneris/Aida.
