The Roumanian-born mezzo-soprano Hermine May, has won many international Opera competitions and initially attracted the attention of Götz Friedrich, who brought her to the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, immediately after completing her studies at the University of Music in Stuttgart. She sang in the ensemble there for four years.
In the years that followed she developed an international career as a dramatic mezzo- soprano with engagements as Carmen which she was singing under the baton of Maestro Frühbeck de Burgos and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , at the Festival Avenches Opera and the Festival of Constanta. As Amneris/ Aida she performed in the Arena Basel , at the Festival Avenches Opera and National Opera Bucharest. Her Brangäne/ Tristan and Isolde brought her to the Teatro dell`Opera in Rome, at the Teatro Filarmonico/ Fondazione Arena di Verona, the Teatro Carlo Felice in Genova and to the Richard Wagner Festival in Wels/ Austria.
As” Magdalene” from “ Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg“ she was heard at the Maggio Musicale of Florence under the baton of Maestro Zubin Mehta.
Since then, she has established herself as a interpreter of Richard Wagner roles like Kundry, Ortrud and Venus.
Venus in Tannhäuser she was performing in the Theater Kiel, at the Royal Opera House of Copenhagen and this year at the Richard Wagner Festival in Wels/ Austria. At the same Festival she sang last year Kundry in Parsifal.
With great success she gave Azucena in Trovatore at the Opera House in Dortmund, where she will be heard as Venus in Tannhäuser in the new season.
Last year she gave her debut at the Scala di Milano in “Les contes d`Hoffmann” with “ Une voix”.
On the concert platform, she has had great successes with works such as Beethoven´s 9 th, Zemlinsky Orchestra Songs (both with Zubin Mehta), Mahler´s Song of the Earth, Verdi´s Requiem, Brahms´ Alto-Rhapsody and Wagner´s Wesendonck- Songs.
Hermine May´s CD recordings include Bellini´s „ Il Pirata“ conducted by Marcello Viotti, Schubert´s Mass in E- flat ( with Jonas Kaufmann, Hermann Prey and Deon van der Walt) and Loewe´s „Die drei Wünsche“. She can be seen on DVD as Carmen and Amneris in Aida.
